White Peak Wandering: Saturday 24th August

Today’s 12ish-mile walk was much more typical of what we know of the Peak District, with wide views of the hills and valleys interspersed with agricultural landscapes and dry stone walls.

There were just enough ups to remind us how flat Suffolk is and the weather was changeable enough to remind us that it’s essential to lug around clothing for every eventuality.

We had a quick look around the church at Elton and a break at Cratcliffe Hermitage for some people to bask in the sunshine drying off waterproofs, whilst others searched the trees and rocks, eventually locating the hermit’s cave.

Later on, much fun was had scrambling up the rocks of Robin Hood’s Stride, which for us will forever be known as “where we met Molly the puppy”.

Our home for the night was Youlgreave hostel, a former Co-Op department store in the heart of the village. The building retains many of its original features (including the fabulous frontage), which, most entertainingly, meant that the boys slept in Ladies Underwear.
